The Casa Volunteer Fund

Help someone come and volunteer at the Casa!

Volunteers are the backbone of the Casa’s work and witness.  Casa de los Amigos provides an incredible, formative experience for volunteers. They work hard at the Casa, learn new skills and gain specialized knowledge in many subjects, live in simple community, and meet hundreds of social actors from Mexico City, Mexico, and the world over. Because we require a six month minimum committment from Casa volunteers, getting to the Casa and performing volunteer service work for up to a year also represents a significant economic sacrifice.  Many volunteers work to raise funds before the come to the Casa by looking towards their family, community, church or Quaker Meeting, and we try to help incoming volunteers with tools to do this well.  However this is not an option for all.

Casa volunteers come here at their own expense and make a huge commitment and contribution without a financial compensation or stipend. We need the help of Casa community members who support the goals of the Casa volunteer program and the amazing work of Casa volunteers. Your contribution towards the Casa Volunteer Fund can go towards several expenses:

1. Volunteer housing at the Casa de los Amigos. While volunteers don’t pay anything to be a volunteer at the Casa outside of their personal expenses, it costs the Casa $4,500 pesos (about $360 dollars) to house one volunteer for one month.

2. Volunteer travel to and from Mexico City. For most volunteers, a round-trip ticket to Mexico City can cost $500 dollars or more, and for some potential volunteers this is a serious difficulty. Volunteers coming to the Casa are also trying to save up to cover their living expenses while they are here, so the plane ticket may be an additional high hurdle.  The Casa generally depends on volunteers to cover these costs, but we would like to be able to provide  matching funds or scholarships in certain situations.

3. Casa volunteer food fund. Each month Casa volunteers decide where and how to spend 800 pesos (about $65 dollars) for staples like beans, rice, oil, salt, pasta,
